Photo of the Week Jan 14, 2018

Taken on a cold December day. This male Downy Woodpecker was busy near the bird feeder at my Dad’s. They mostly feed on suet but will eat black oil sunflower also.

It is easy to tell male from female with Downy Woodpeckers. The male has the red stripe on it’s head and the female doesn’t.

In winter they tend to join flocks of chickadees and other small birds for safety in numbers, and for a better chance finding food.
